All good companies are good at managing expenses.

All CFOs are paid to ensure there is cost-cutting at all times. This is just a reality of operating in a free market economy. One never knows when there will be a downturn.

However, very few companies are good at making investments.

Investments are about being optimistic. Investment is about innovation. Investment is about being ready for the future.

Good CFOs can take calculated risks, encourage teams to take chances, and are fiscally prudent and aim to achieve returns. However, if the ROI is lower than expectations but the team did a good job, they will still be supportive—a sign of a great CFO!
